Shavings

Been considering cedar shavings. When we can get a delivery of course, when it's dry enough. If it's ever dry enough. Think we can get in a semi load. Some of you won't like it - it's a little rougher. But the good points are it's available! and it is easier to clean the stalls. And it keeps the bugs out of the stalls. Whatya think?

I think it is a great idea! I use it in my horse trailer and it really does keep the bugs out...plus it smells great. I say go for it! Karen

I understand thru articles on the internet that these shavings can cause resp. problems in horses. This should be looked into before we have a barn full of horses with problems.

We've been without shavings for at least 1/2 of the past 9 months or so. Everyone is grumbling and talking about deducting the cost of buying their own bags off the board check. There's got to be a way to get shavings. What do other barns do? Can it be delivered to top of hill and Jim bring enough down for each day with the tractor and enough for the weekend on Friday? HELP. I can't afford this.

When Diane managed Solbacke for the many years that she did we had cedar shavings and they would get mixed with pine other times it was straight cedar. We never and I meand NEVER in the 10 years i had horses there did we have respiratory problems because of the cedar shavings. They are less dusty then pine and all our horses are use to cedar so allergies are less likely. -Tiff

I do not care what kind of shavings. There just needs to be shavings at all times. They are right about the lack of shavings this past year. I have heard of some people talk about moving as a result. There is no excuse to not have shavings at all times, even if Kinswood has to buy bags for all the boarders.

Yeah! Shavings; and the barn has fewer flies and is less smelly because of them!

I know it sucks to not have shavings but if you're thinking about moving because of it ask around to some of the other boarders who have been other places. Marcos you pay almost twice as much board and your horse only gets two bags. Col's has alot of well I guess you could call it shavings but mostly its old poop and the stalls don't ever get done on mondays..again you pay twice as much, that doesn't even include the extra $5 a day you would pay if you want your horse turned out fot two hours.

Not true. Marcos has all the shavings they want $450 and covered arena. Col's $500 to include 2 lessons a week. Some went over there and stalls look great , no problem with shavings. Although neither place has great turnout. The problem at Kinswood is shavings and clean stalls and then we would have less fly problems.

OK, I think we all agree that every barn has its good points and bad points. They have lighted covered rings, we have a beautiful property with turnout and wonderful trails. The point is that shavings are part of the deal at Kinswood. It is bad for their feet to stand in urine and poop. The shaving and stall cleaning issues are my only problems. There has to be a solution.
